New Gig! Dirtblonde Live Return with Wry at Jacaranda, Liverpool

Dirtblonde live at Jacaranda

Dirtblonde live at Jacaranda in June!

The world was getting bored so we couldn’t help it and had to sort ourselves out for another live comeback. Dirtblonde plays at Jacaranda on Slater St. Liverpool, on 3rd June. We’re pleased to announce that our Brazilian friends from Wry will also be playing! A great band with shoegaze and britpop influences. Support comes from a new Liverpool band, Food, who are definitely worth watching!

Everyone is too safe, clean and content in Liverpool right now… safe in their belief that the music scene is oh so great here but, sorry to say, we disagree.

No, we don’t belong and we’re happy with that. After all, we are still one of the only bands in Liverpool (the only, maybe!) truly influenced by Sonic Youth, Jesus & Mary Chain, Velvet Underground, Patti Smith… if that makes us outsiders then ok!

What’s wrong with people, here! Frankly, we don’t care. So don’t be boring and join us. Enjoy the noise. A luta continua…

Dirtblonde + SeaWitches + Beach Skulls live at Mello Mello this week!

Dirtblonde play at Mello Mello Liverpool

How come no one in Liverpool has thought about this before? Putting these three bands –  three of the best and most unique guitar bands in Liverpool, we think! – to play on the same bill: Dirtblonde, SeaWitches and Beach Skulls.

Well, that’s exactly what’s happening this Wednesday at Mello Mello (Slater Street, corner by Parr Street) and fans of guitar music can’t miss this!

After all, this will be a very special bill, featuring sonic delights far superior to the usual safe, cliched indie that dominates most guitar music in the North West. Dirtblonde will bring our usual Sonic Youth-meets-Suicide-meets-Patti Smith noise; SeaWitches offer their very special blend of dark, psych guitar music; and Beach Skulls will open proceedings with their lo-fi surf music inspired by Link Wray (and approved by Ken Dodd!)

Add to this: cool film projections, psychedelic lights and the ‘Dirtblonde Sound System’ pumping some ace tunes through Mello Mello’s PA, all for the modest entry fee of £4, and you have all you need for a memorable evening.

If you’re in Liverpool this Wednesday 19th September, don’t miss this gig – after all, it’s not just Liverpool Biennial and the usual Freshers Week carnage going on this week… But some excellent rock’n’roll, too!

Coming Soon: Calvin Johnson gig in Liverpool!

Dirtblonde are proud to announce we’ll be bringing Calvin Johnson to play in Liverpool again! The Beat Happening / K Records alternative rock legend will play at a Liverpool Calling event on Monday 2nd August at Leaf Tea Shop & Bar.

Calvin Johnson live in Liverpool!

Calvin Johnson live in Liverpool!

In case you don’t already know it, Calvin Johnson, via his many musical projects and record label, has inspired and influenced a lot of indie rock artists including Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Beth Ditto, Sonic Youth and Beck, besides kick starting the Riot Grrl movement. (and, lest we forget, inspired Dirtblonde too, who regularly cover the Beat Happening’s Black Candy – watch video)

Calvin Johnson loved playing in Liverpool when we first brought him here a couple of years ago, and now he’s returning for his only North West gig, so don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch a true indie legend!

Best of all – this is a All Ages gig, kids!

Where: Leaf Tea Shop & Bar (27 Parliament St, Liverpool)

When: Monday 2nd August.

Doors 7pm, entry £6. Calvin Johnson will be onstage at 8pm, sharp! Support from Tom George and Emily & The Faves. Dirtblonde DJ set only. PLEASE NOTE: DOORS ONLY, NO TICKETS WILL BE ON SALE SO MAKE SURE TO GET THERE EARLY!

‘White Noise, Rubber Heart’ Digital Re-Release!

Dirtblonde’s debut 6-track EP/mini-album ‘White Noise, Rubber Heart’ is finally available in digital format.

‘White Noise, Rubber Heart’ finally gets a digital release and is now available (with one bonus track – Pretty) from iTunes , CD Baby and, soon, all other major download sites.

The album shows Dirtblonde influenced/inspired by the music of Jesus & Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith and Velvet Underground, but still managing to create their own sound.  It was described as “A refreshing pile of rock’n’roll scuzz …It relives the punk rock era with surprising ease and delicacy, mixing the sound of breaking bones and smashing faces with sophisticated glamour.” (Tasty Fanzine).

Another reviewer called Dirtblonde “twisted geniuses in the making”.

‘White Noise, Rubber Heart’  was mostly recorded at home in Liverpool, on a portable 8-track recorder, with vocals recorded in the kitchen and drum tracks in the bathroom (it had a great reverb!). This is D.IY. rock’n’roll! The only exceptions were ‘The Hangmen’ (recorded in Leicester) and ‘Pretty’ (recorded in sunny Rio de Janeiro).

Download White Noise Rubber Heart today, and get ready for Dirtblonde’s next new release, the Brooklyn/ White Horses single, out 19th April!

About the original 2007 release:

The album was originally released in May 2007 on Filthy Little Angels, as a split CD-R with The Leatherettes, featuring a B&W hand-stamped cover. Some copies  may still be available – Check the FLA website.

Dirtblonde launched the album with an in-store gig at the (then) new HMV store on Bold St, Liverpool – the third act to play there, after Maximo Park and The Wombats!

Watch new Dirtblonde video! ‘Black Candy’ (Beat Happening cover)

Ok…so we’ve posted it online a few days ago. Our noisy cover of Beat Happenings’ Black Candy, perhaps closer in spirit to the Sonic Youth version.

Click to watch Black Candy on YouTube

This video consists of live footage from a couple of Dirtblonde gigs (at Nice’n’Sleazy in Glasgow and Korova in Liverpool) and gives you a taste of the “Dirtblonde live experience” if you will!
Enjoy, and feel free to tell your friends about it!

Dirtblonde’s Liverpool Music Week Gig @ The Masque Goes Down A Storm!

Dirtblonde’s Liverpool Music Week gig at The Masque, supporting Bombay Bicycle Club, was a classic for the band.

Dirtblonde at The Masque, Liverpool Music Week 2009

After The Sand Band had the pull out, the organisers moved Dirtblonde up on the bill, as the main support act for the Bombay Bicycle Club boys.

The venue was packed and, perhaps unsurprisingly, nothing could prepare the audience  for the “Dirtblonde experience”! After all, the Liverpool Music Week indie crowds attending a nice, clean Bombay Bicycle Club gig were not necessarily the types who’d enjoy a Sonic Youth/ Jesus & Mary Chain-style rock’n’roll onslaught!

First song, a new one called White Horses, seemed to leave the audience speechless. Literally – as soon as the song ended, after a barrage of guitars and weird tape echo oscillations, we were met with stunned silence.

Well, what can we do? It’s fashionable to say you are influenced by Jesus And Mary Chain or dance to Sonic Youth’s Kool Thing, or wear a Ramones t-shirt you bought from Topshop…but as soon as a band actually sounds as raw, loud and fucked-up as those bands did at their best, people are just not used to it!

Not to say Dirtblonde’s set didn’t go down well – it went down pretty well…and as usual the band split the audience: a few “boos”, some cheers, some excited teen girls, photographers tapping along to our songs…the whole lot!

“That’s how it works – if you like us, you clap. If you don’t like us – fuck off.”

Some shitty little bands the NME likes are there to entertain the indie audiences…we are here to give you an experience. Like it or not. Remember that thing, ROCK AND ROLL?

Check more pics from The Masque gig at Too Funky’s Dirtblonde set (thanks!)

Ah! We also just found a cool pic of Ivan almost hitting the photographer with his Epiphone Wilshire…check it out!
